6 Hot Summer Road Trip Tips

How to get away without a hitch.

The best thing about road tripping is not having any rules. You’re free to go and stop as you please, making time to follow every whim. There are, however, a number of ways to ensure your getaway is as fun and exciting as possible, especially in the July heat. Check out our hot tips for a successful summer road trip below.

Reserve campgrounds now

A cozy campsite makes all the difference, and chances are, there are other travelers vying for the same ones. If you’re planning a camping trip for anytime this summer, find the perfect spot ahead of time and reserve well in advance of your trip to secure it. Parks like the Chickasaw National Recreation Area, Lake Texoma and Lake Murray are popular destinations for outdoor recreation and prime campsites are going to fill up fast. Be sure to check your favorite park’s website for reservation details.

Discover natural swimming areas

There’s no better way to cool off on a hot summer day than dipping into one of Oklahoma’s many natural swimming areas. There’s something extra special about a free-flowing river or a shaded, naturally occurring pool that allows us to connect with nature and immerse ourselves in our current environments. Step off the beaten path to find a secluded pool just for you. The Blue River, Turner Falls and the Chickasaw National Recreation Area are three fantastic locations with refreshing water to enjoy.

Stay outside as much as much as possible

When your road trip is centered on outdoor recreation, keeping the momentum going will be key to a successful trip. A break in exploration could be a pause on the excitement that’s built thus far, so it’s best to keep pushing onward toward new experiences. As you’ll read below, there’s a time and a place for chilling inside but one of the best ways to optimize your road trip is to soak up as much as you can from these incredible outdoor destinations. Feeling the sun on your skin and the breeze through your hair is one of the best perks of summer travel.

Spend the hottest hours indoors

Around midday, when the sun is in full blaze, retreat to the cool interior of a museum or local restaurant and recharge while making new discoveries. This is the ideal time to explore the area’s art, history and culture and simply enjoy a change of scenery. Staying energized and hydrated is essential for getting the most out of a road trip. It’s important to nourish your body with fresh, whole foods to sustain you as you hike, swim, fish and explore. There’s no time to be weighed down by a big meal! Many restaurants on Adventure Road have seasonal menus that are as innovative as they are flavorful. We explored a few in our Fresh, Local Eats blog. There are several Chickasaw Travel Stop locations peppered along Adventure Road, and each welcomes weary travelers with clean facilities and friendly service, in addition to the refreshments and fuel we need to for the road.
