Oklahoma’s only thrill park.
Back in 1958, Oklahoma city slickers witnessed the cutting of the ribbon on a theme park that would one day become Frontier City. Well, not an actual ribbon. Instead, a rope was stretched across the stockade entrance and shot with an old-fashioned six shooter to commence the grand opening. Today, the amusement park continues to pay tribute to the Wild West through its many rides, restaurants and events. We’re excited to have Frontier City in our collection of preferred destinations as it brings adrenaline-pumping, family-friendly and, in October, some spooky, spirited fun.
Check out some of our favorite things about Frontier City and stay tuned for the exciting event at the end. Saddle up, partner!
A Variety of 30 Rides for All-Day Fun
From thrilling coasters to rides for kids, there’s exciting fun to wrangle up for everyone. For maximum thrill, head to the Silver Bullet and the Diamondback, two visitor favorites that send riders soaring through loops and wild turns. Another popular choice for thrill seekers is the Steel Lasso, which is the only suspended coaster in Oklahoma. You’ll definitely want your shoes tied tight for that one! If you’re looking for something gentler, opt for kid-friendly rides like Tin Lizzy’s electric-powered antique cars, Frankie’s Mine Train or Tina’s Tea Party spinning cups. During the summer months, the twisty, turny Renegade Rapids, Gully Washer and Wild West Water Works (complete with 5-story-tall, 1,000-gallon tipping bucket of water) are perfect for cooling down. Luckily, there’s plenty of fall events and activities to enjoy right now.
Yummy Treats Keep the Fun Going
Jumbo pretzels, pulled pork sandwiches, pizza, footlong corndogs, French fries and more … you want it? You got it! It’s so fun to visit the themed restaurants all over the grounds, like Buffalo Bill’s Old West Eatery, the Chuckwagon Food Court, Rusty Spur Café and Saddle Rock Café. Many places, like Two John’s Saloon, also have ice-cold beer and frozen boozy drinks for 21+ visitors to wet their whistles. You gotta have fun foods while at a theme park, right? Here’s some key advice, though: make sure you get the food and sweet treats after you’ve ridden the 7-story looping Brain Drain coaster. Unless you’re confident in your iron stomach, that is.
Shopping in the Wild West
Outside of the dining spots, you can pick up sweets like homemade fudge, cotton candy, hot chocolate and more at shops like the Bonton Confectionery, Emporium and Frontier Trading Company. Giddy on up to Trappers Trading Post for toys, accessories, Frontier City- and Oklahoma-themed merch, bottled beverages and more. If you want to capture the fun your group is having, Matthew Brady’s Old Time Photography is on site with a Wild West-inspired set and attire to make for a super-fun portrait. Finding the perfect souvenir at these shops is a great way to encapsulate the fun memories you’ll create at Frontier City.
HALLOWFEST in October
Now through the end of October, the entire park is filled with thrills by day and chills by night. Bring the kiddos to the Selfie Trick-or-Treat Trail for some candy and hit up the Little Monster Maze before a live performance by the Singing Pumpkins. Then, as the clock strikes 7 p.m., be prepared for spooks and scares from monsters, fright trails, stunt show scare zones and more. This extra-special event is complete with eerie fog and bone-chilling music that provides the perfect backdrop for riding coasters at night. Are you ready to leave everyday life behind and immerse yourself in spirited Halloween fun? Be sure to get your tickets in advance.
