The Ideal Davis Daytrip

Hidden gems worth a stop.

For a little town nestled in the Arbuckle Mountains, Davis sure has more than its fair share of hidden gems. With delicious food and breathtaking views, it’s well worth your time to do more than just pass through. Here is your guide to an ideal day in Davis filled with some places you’re probably familiar with and some perhaps not as much. If there are any you think we’ve left off, let us know in the comments below!

Arbuckle Mountain Fried Pies

Nothing fuels a day of adventuring quite like a hot, fresh Arbuckle Mountain Fried Pie. There are dozens of flavors, from sweet apple and creamy coconut to the savory bacon, egg and cheese and the spicy Tex-Mex pie. Owner Nancy Fulton’s grandmother used the delicious recipe to feed ranch hands back in 1893, and now it’s the backbone of a beloved Davis establishment. If you’re visiting or passing through Davis, there’s no doubt you need to make a pit stop. We highly recommend enforcing a “one now, one for later” rule.

It’s not a trip to the Arbuckles without hiking around the sandy beaches, natural caves and swimming areas at Turner Falls Park. Its namesake waterfall is the tallest in Oklahoma and provides an impressive picturesque view. The panoramic view from nearby 777 Zip is by far the grandest. The unique zipline sends you soaring through the sky 777 feet above Collings Castle, located within the park. Tickets are $15 for a single rider or $25 for two. Owner Gary Fielding is always kind and helpful; tell him we say hello!

I mean, c’mon, what’s better than filling up on some of Oklahoma’s best BBQ after an afternoon of hiking and swimming? Smokin’ Joe’s serves up massive lunch and dinner platters that are perfect for sharing or the extra-hungry adventurer. The smoky sliced brisket, hot links, pulled pork and chicken will have your mouth watering. Be sure to add a side of homemade potato salad and baked beans. You can dine in or grab your order to go to enjoy with a view of the mountains.

You can get premium fuel and your favorite snacks at any of the Chickasaw Travel Stop locations along Adventure Road. However, the Davis West location is right across the street from the Bedré Fine Chocolate factory and is a great place to stock up on a wide variety of flavors until it reopens to the public. CTS is known for its clean restrooms and fast, friendly service, which is something we can all appreciate while on a road trip. Whether you stop in for the ATM, some hot food or the casino, CTS Davis West has you covered.
